Attracting over 100,000 visitors a year, the Wedgwood Museum, sited at the companies UK manufacturing headquarters at Barlaston, Stoke on Trent was largely supported by £5.867 million in funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF).
In total, the Museum houses about 6,000 Wedgwood artefacts – some never seen by the public before – 75,000 original manuscripts detailing everything from international trade, social history, the anti-slavery campaign and the building of Britain’s canal system.
It shows everything from Josiah’s Wedgwood’s experimental trials which changed the face of the UK ceramics industry, keynote designs and products from throughout the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries and even stunning original pictures by artists Joshua Reynolds and George Stubbs.
It also includes an education centre for short stay visitors, schools and academic scholars, a unique interactive ‘magic carpet’ ride allowing the visitor to ‘fly’ around Wedgwood’s original Etruria factory, now demolished, a reference library and specially built ‘bottle ovens’ and 18th century display areas.
